Courses

What I teach and how I design learning experiences that meet students where they are.

Community English Program

In collaboration with a larger team, the Community English program was designed to equip adult English learners with strategies to use English in their community. I created a course that encourages the use of English in context, as language and culture are deeply intertwined.

In class, I prepare students with the tools they need in their daily lives, creating a safe space for them to share their experiences with their peers. This course supports students who may have never taken English classes before, building strategies and confidence in the process.

My presentation for the Board of Trustees in February 2025 outlined the preliminary impact of the program in its first year, serving a total of 26 students. For Fall 2025, 12 students were selected out of 48 applicants. The impact has been documented in local news outlets including Oceana Echo and Ludington Daily News.

Capstone Projects

Among the accomplishments I have been most proud of are the capstone projects in both English Composition and Community English classes:

Digital Portfolio: English Composition students review their essays, collect evidence of their work, and create a website that tells a reflective story about their learning trajectory — presented to the community during finals week.

Humans of Hart Photoblog: Community English students share community stories through writing and photography, presented in poster-style format at William M. Anderson Library.

Writing Essentials Lab

Writing Essentials Lab provides an extended space to work with English Comp 1 students at the developmental level while cultivating academic behaviors such as metacognitive thinking and study habits. Students submit WOOP tickets on Canvas assessing their participation based on a study Wish, intended Outcome, anticipated Obstacle, and Plan to overcome it.

Embedded Coaching Model

Across classes, I facilitate the presence of embedded coaches to differentiate instruction and student learning. Their most notable impact has been providing individualized "just-in-time" assistance, and I have used it strategically to ensure students have meaningful engagements as they prepare for their writing projects.
